Understanding the Different Angel Aligner Solutions

Angel Aligner has a portfolio of four purpose-built systems, each engineered for a different stage of orthodontic treatment. Knowing the difference helps make sense of why your orthodontist might recommend one system over another, or move you between systems as your treatment progresses.

Here’s what each one actually is.

Angel Aligner Select: The Everyday System

Angel Aligner Select is a versatile clear aligner system built to handle a broad spread of general alignment cases in teens and adults, from spacing and crowding through to more involved movements.

Select is powered by masterControl S, a multi-layer polymer engineered to balance flexibility and rigidity so it can manage a range of different tooth movement patterns within a single aligner material, rather than switching materials partway through treatment.

It’s also the most established product in the range, with close to one million patients treated using Select since its introduction, built on over two decades of product development.

The Select system is best suited for general alignment cases like crowding, spacing, and moderate bite corrections that don’t require the more specialised engineering of the Pro system.

Angel Aligner Pro: For Complex Cases

Where Select handles the everyday, Pro is engineered specifically for complex cases — the movements that need more precision, more control, and more anchorage than a standard aligner can reliably deliver.

What sets Pro apart is its dual-aligner “7+3” system. Rather than using one material throughout a stage, each stage of treatment uses two aligners in sequence:

  • masterControl S (worn for 7 days): a softer material that initiates movement gently and prioritises patient comfort
  • masterControl (worn for 3 days): a firmer material that adds precision and refines the movement

This staged approach to force delivery is designed to improve predictability in demanding cases without adding unnecessary complexity to the patient’s routine.

Pro is generally reserved for cases involving significant crowding or the kind of complexity where Select’s single-material approach isn’t enough on its own. Pro is also typically more expensive than Select since Pro is engineered for more complex cases requiring additional materials and technology.

Angel Aligner KiD: Built for Growing Patients

Angel Aligner KiD takes a different approach entirely. Adolescent patients often need guidance for how the jaw and bite develop. KiD is described as a three-in-one system: tooth alignment, myofunctional correction (addressing habits like tongue thrust or low tongue posture), and jaw growth guidance, combined into a single aligner-based approach.

Treatment is structured around two phases:

  • Ages 6–12 (mixed dentition): treatment can include myofunctional appliances to address habits, A6 Mandibular Advancement to combine jaw guidance with tooth movement, space creation and maintenance for erupting permanent teeth, and support for guided eruption.
  • Ages 12+ (transition to permanent dentition): treatment expands into a more comprehensive aligner approach, using tools like angelButton and eruption guides, digital arch-shaping planning, and continued use of A6 where a bite correction is still needed.

This phased structure means a child can, in principle, stay within the same product family from early mixed dentition right through to a fuller aligner-based treatment as their permanent teeth come through — rather than switching systems entirely partway through.

Angel Aligner Retainer: Holding the Result

Once active treatment finishes, the job shifts from moving teeth to keeping them in place. Angel Aligner Retainer is built specifically for that job.

It’s fabricated from a proprietary 1.0mm material engineered for durability and comfort during daily wear, with a light-diffusing, anti-reflective quality designed to keep it visually unobtrusive.

Retainers can be supplied for patients who completed treatment with Angel Aligner, or for patients coming from other treatment types entirely, including options to support fixed or lingual retainer workflows.

How the Four Systems Work Together

Most patients will only need Select, but the range is designed so an orthodontist can move between products as a case requires. Your orthodontist will assess your case and recommend the right product, or combination of products, as part of your treatment plan.

They will also advise if and when a change makes sense for your case. For example, transitioning a growing patient from KiD into further alignment as their permanent teeth come through. Which combination makes sense is a clinical decision made during your assessment, not a fixed pathway.

Why This Matters for Your Treatment

None of these products are interchangeable, and using the right one for your case is part of what a specialist orthodontist’s training is for. Choosing between Select and Pro, timing a transition through KiD’s two phases, or knowing when retention should begin all depend on an assessment of your specific bite, growth stage, and treatment goals. It’s never a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Dr. Adriana Perez grew up in Caracas, Venezuela. She is one of the registered specialist orthodontist working at Shakespeare Orthodontics in Auckland.

In 2008, Adriana graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Santa Maria University in Caracas, Venezuela. After graduation, she worked in Venezuela in private practice, at the Orthopaedic Children’s Hospital (Dentistry/Orthodontics unit), and as a lecturer in the National Experimental University of the Armed Forces.

In the year 2011, Adriana moved to Argentina to specialise, gaining the Specialist Orthodontist degree from the University of Buenos Aires in 2013. While in Argentina, she worked as a part-time lecturer at the Orthodontics Department in the University of Buenos Aires, private practice, and at the Craniofacial Unit in the Paediatric Hospital Garrahan, looking after cleft lip new-borns, children, and adolescent patients.

Adriana is a Spanish speaker. In her spare time, she likes going to the beach, travelling, socialising with friends, playing video games, cooking, and going to the gym.

Dr. Azza Al-Ani

Dr Azza Al-Ani, grew up in Christchurch, is a registered specialist orthodontist working at Shakespeare Orthodontics in Auckland. You can find her at one of the clinics in the city, or at their Takapuna clinic on the North Shore. 

In 2009, Azza graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery with Credit from the University of Otago.

She worked as a dental house surgeon at Auckland, Greenlane and Middlemore Hospitals, and as a dental officer at Sydney’s Westmead Hospital.

In 2012, she completed the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) primary examinations.

Before commencing her specialist training, she held a part-time Professional Practice Fellow position at the Faculty of Dentistry, while working as a dentist in private practice.

In 2016, Azza graduated from the University of Otago with a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics. She passed examinations to gain memberships into the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

She is also certified with the Australasian Orthodontic Board, and is a member of the New Zealand Association of Orthodontists, and the New Zealand Dental Association / New Zealand Dental Council.

Azza’s area of research interest is hypodontia. She has presented about this topic at the European Orthodontic Society Congress, and at the International Association Dental Research ANZ Scientific Meeting, and has been involved in the publication of numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals:

Outside of work, Azza loves spending time with her son and Mo (her husband), socialising with family and friends, overseas travel, and tries to keep up with Mo while mountain biking.

Dr. Mo Al-Dujaili

Mo is a Specialist Orthodontist. He grew up in both New Zealand and Australia.

After completing a year in Health Sciences, and later physiotherapy, he qualified as a dentist in New Zealand. He spent the next four years working alongside his father in Sydney where he practised general dentistry. Mo then returned to Dunedin to specialise, gaining his specialist degree – Clinical Doctorate in Orthodontics from the University of Otago.

During the three years of specialist training, Mo had the privilege of learning from the best. The combined clinical and academic acumen of professors, doctors and staff provided an invaluable experience.

Meanwhile, Mo published and presented significant research and clinical cases at both national and international forums, including the International Association of Dental Research, the Australasian Begg Society of Orthodontics, the European Orthodontic Society and the New Zealand Dental Association conference.

A firm believer in maintaining high clinical standards, Mo successfully completed further examinations to become affiliated with the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (Sydney).

Outside of work, Mo enjoys the precious time with his young family and the outdoors. He especially loves mountain biking, running, fishing, diving and, in winter, snowboarding.

Traveling along with his best friend and wife (Azza) around the world has also been a big part of Mo’s life. Mo is primarily based in Shakespeare Orthodontic’s city clinics and on the North Shore.
